Ulzzang is a Korean word that means ”best face”, and the term is used to describe people who have become popular for their appearances. The ulzzang craze started in South Korea, where some of the most famous ulzzangs can earn celebrity status.

Many ulzzang wannabes post their pictures on websites, where contests are often held to pick the prettiest faces. While many of these people are natural beauties, many contestants also photoshop their pictures and wear tons of makeup. As a result, some of them do not look anything like their pictures in real life.

Here is a Link of some before/after ulzzang transformations. As you can tell, the changes are quite obvious.

I also found the following thread on Soompi and thought I'd repost it here (quite shocking). These are NOT pictures of me lol.

Amaaaaaazing! But I also don’t believe that she didn’t photoshop those pictures. I don’t know how else she could have achieved those lighting effects. Those same lighting effects that conceal the broadness of her nose, for example. Plus, I doubt that the sepia tone was not done by photoshop.

Smack me, I’m really jonesing for those circle lenses!

she looks great in the AFTER pictures... but shes got that Anime look in her eyes.. hahah well of course its the eyelid glue..
but for some reason.. the before pictures.. i know she got some waxing done.. lol (sorry to be rude)..and maybe a facial and some photoshoping..
but they look nothing like her.. she must love puttin makeup on though!
but it reminds me of the fresh prince episode where she takes off her lashes and nails.. hahah .. flashback 80’s

i agree with lypiphera. those have gotta be photoshopped to at least adjust the contrast/brightness level. the circle lenses look really freaky without the fake lashes. but the transformation is very impressive. i’d say it doesn’t even look like the same person at all!

this scares me . . but she does look cute in the after pics

That’s really scary... The fact that people are so concerned about physical appearances and are superficial enough to start such a craze.

Thanks for sharing though (I guess... haha.) You learn something new everyday.

And she MUST have photoshopped.

...i actually don’t like the end result very much.. her eyes just became soo huge.. = / I think she would have been fine without the eye-changing (the falsies were nice though). But wow.. that is a huge before and after. the power of makeup..

Mmmm my phone has a sepia option for pictures as well as black and white. My cell pictures always (almost) turn out super contrasty with crazy lighting hence why everyone wants me to take their picture with my phone. I’ve stopped using my phone as much on my entries for that very reason. I have worked on people and really, it can be a 1000% transformation. I wouldn’t mind looking like that though I would obviously do my make-up much less cute and more punky. I’ve seen this story up on Taobao as well along with tonnes of other people and really, they girls can look fantastic! I envy ’em Cheers

well not ’photoshopped’ probably implies that she hasn’t used the warp function/airbrushing to actually change her features. she clearly has changed the lighting and exposure of the photo, which does completely alter the viewer’s perception of her features, but isn’t the same as actually going into photoshop and changing her features.

but anyways... a) circle lenses scare the sh!t out of me because they make people look doll-like (aka dead), b) you can tell she’s raising her eyebrows to help expand her eyes and c) i just wonder about how much she must dislike her physical appearance on a day-to-day basis to warrant this drastic-and fake-transformation.

sigh. this stuff makes me want to forgo makeup altogether... but my undereye circles would make a baby cry.

there was no way she didn’t photoshop her picture. the shape of her face COMPLETELY changed! She started out with a ”square” shaped face and ended up with a ”V” shaped face. if you look at Step 1, her lips already changed from full lips to thinner lips and supposedly, all she did was eyelid glue and circle lens.

1:46am, Jan 21 2008 by FeiFei:
That’s quite a dramatic transformation. The circle lenses alone make a huge difference, but it looks like she might be using the Barbie ones that make your eyes glassy and dead. I’m getting the lenses myself, but not necessarily to achieve the Ulzzang look. Anyway, she looks cute in the after photos, photoshop or not. I just wouldn’t want to wake up next to her when all that comes off. Oh the mustachioed horror!
#14
2:14am, Jan 21 2008 by Lypiphera:
Mustachioed... ROFLMAO...

I didn’t even realize that about her lips... I just realized what she looks like with the circle lens before she put the lashes and mascara on... a gerbil! I’m thinking of experimenting with circle lenses too... but the barbie ones would probably leave no whites in my eyes. One of the more natural ones, maybe... to make my eye color darker.

6:09am, Jan 21 2008 by Revengeofthemisfit:
arggh! she’s cute and all, but those poses freak the hell out of me. especially the the whole tight-lipped,pointed pixie chin, glassy-eyed stare. i guess it’ll look kool temporaily, but permanently....yikes! its kinda like the cute version of a emo pose.
#18
7:12am, Jan 21 2008 by Yoshi (Banned):
Lypiphera, I agree. I don’t think she has much whites to her eyes if she wasn’t posing and stretching her eyes open that much more.

whoa this is CRAZYY!! Incredible what makeup and some contacts (and lighting effects in photoshop OR lighting effects in cell phones as yoshi has mentioned) can do. I think it would have been better if that girl didn’t try to open her eyes so wide--it looks CREEPYYY when she does that. If she relaxed her eyes, even with all that stuff on her, I’m sure the pictures wouldn’t look as scary.

and i agree with fei in that, I have to admit, she does look cuter in her after pictures, even if it does have some creepiness to it. maybe if that girl didn’t choose such HUGE contacts, and opted for a medium instead of large, perhaps her appearance would at least look slightly more realistic, or bearable.

I’ve seen the post on other Chinese sites before and the posts are always to the idea of how different a person looks like after makeup application, but that’s a given. On the one hand it’s kind scary to see what ppl are willing to do to look pretty. one the other hand it’d freak me out to have someone looking like that to walk down the street. I’d prob scream. But then, so many Asian, esp those from Korean, China and Japan try so hard to look whiter and ”cute” in the sense of a Barbie.

I actually quite like the end result. Though, it might look good in pictures but I wonder what it looks like in real life. Since she obviously must have caked on so much make up I’d probably be scared to death :p LOL

hmm. i dunno, i thought she looked really cute, kinda like japanese anime, which i loooove! i don’t have ”asian” eyes, but i reeeally want a pair of circle lenses now ’cuz i wanna look like a shark! *giggles wickedly*

11:45am, Jan 21 2008 by Millysma:
I agree with Revengeofthemisfit... it’s cute emo, Asian-style!
I don’t know about anyone else, but dear lord, the eyes freaked the crap out of me! I keep scrolling back up to make sure that its the same person!
Kudos for the transformation, I suppose. But why would you wanna walk around like that?

You’d get a net thrown over you, then you’d be put into a van where they’d take you to a factory, stuff you in a pink cardboard box with a clear plastic window and sell you for $29.99 as the new Asian Barbie doll *shudders* my worst nightmare

Frick, seeing this first thing in the morning freaks the HELL out of me. It’s not that I don’t like either the before or after but that fake pucker of the lips and the ridiculously large iris just creeps me out when I’m only half awake.

Otherwise, cool transformation! Too bad all the makeup and circle-lensing in the world won’t make her look anything like that picture in real life.

I do believe her if she says these pictures weren’t photoshopped, though. She’s either using her webcam or her camera phone and the settings of either can easily have been rendered to heighten the contrast and lighting. You should see some of the pictures I took on my friends’ phones in Korea. I look COMPLETELY different. To make the chin pointy, all she had to do was raise the camera angle, lower her own chin and cover her jaws w/her hair. Girl’s a pro.

BTW I’m totally jealous of her skin omg.

My god. Ulzzangs alone must keep the entire eyelid glue industry afloat.

It bothers me how ulzzangs all have that same cookie cutter look though - ultra-huge eyes, tiny pointy chin, non-existant nose... it’s like they base their entire standard of beauty on animated characters drawn by sexually repressed men.

(Also, this is really weird, but the girl you have posted looks exactly like one of my male friends, if he were in drag. It’s scary to imagine him ”transforming” himself into an ulzzang. Ugh!”

Gong Li is considered to be one of the most beautiful women in the world, and she certainly doesn’t look like an ulzzang... I think she’d lose her exotic, graceful, and dare I say, mature appeal if she did.

i hate girls who dont act like who they are. i definitely do not like girls who act all cute and stuff. it is so fake. i believe that inner beauty counts the most. if ur inner beauty is beautiful it will definitely show. nothing fake about that. and this girl... ew.. she cant look like that after.. im very very surprised... but very impressed with the photoshop skills.. O.O

THE ONLY WAY HER FACE SLIMED DOWN IS BY THE BANGS AND TAKING PICTURES AT AN ANGLE AND THE HAIR TO THE SIDE. IT DOESN’T TAKE A GENIUS TO FIGURE THAT OUT. BUT I THINK SHE’S CUTE. DESPITE THE TRANSFORMATION...ALL IN ALL IT’S SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT.

It’s an interesting ”transformation”, but I don’t necessarily believe that she did or did NOT use Photoshop. Meaning, that she might have used it to adjust picture resolution and light, but I don’t think she has altered her features.

Her lips may look thinner because she has them pursed. I know people who do it, though it makes me laugh when they can’t do it consistently throughout the day and they get frustrated because they don’t think they’re pretty unless.

Also, I believe she probably used her hair to her advantage and found poses that slimmed the look of her square face shape.

I like the after pictures and I don’t think I would necessarily scream if I saw her on the street, though I would stare at her for a while. Seriously, I wanna see Eyelid glue in action! Can she blink?! xD

9:28pm, Mar 6 2009 by Pink_polka234:
Very cute. The lighting changed her nose though, and cleared her blemishes and dark circles. She is raising her eyerows, making her eyes look bigger as well as the glue and falsies.

And it isn’t possible for her to be the same person. Her chin is too different. It’s not possible to change that.

you can change the chin with angles though . . . also i think the before picture is from when she was younger . . . (btw shaving off that mustache really helped )

Before photo: chubby cheeks
After photo: cheek bones

Two different people, unless the same person has really good photoshop skills and made her face slimmer.

re #60: I don’t think she ”lost weight” and decided to post two different pictures on two different days. Wouldn’t the point of this ”makeup magic” thing be to show a before and after of the same person with the same face? It seems misleading to post a chubbier before photo and a slimmer after photo when you want to show off the effects of makeup.

As Korean man, I really scared to girls doing this. I don’t understand. She can’t going around pretending to be pretty because she really not. There are many beautiful Asian woman in this world and they do not have to put super huge lenses into her eyeballs. Who says that big eyes are more beautiful anyway? I hurts me to know that so many Asian (specially Koreans, and Japanese) believe that westerners are the standard of beauty. I believe it is mental illness. I’ve shown this to many of my friends here in U.S. and they all think it is unfortunate, that so many Asians are stricken with this ”body dysmorphia”, and they think that Asian woman is better for they’re exoticness. Why wanna look like white girl? You are more beautiful.
